Don Metzler is a professional geologist and groundwater hydrologist with over thirty-five years of experience in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) technical and project management, both in geotechnical and mining exploration/production. While serving as a Project Director and COR, he led a diverse team of Federal staff and contractors in NEPA compliance, project design, value engineering, construction build-out, complex radiological operations and maintenance, groundwater pump and treat with reinjection in a highly saline/brine–freshwater interface system, lead public affairs, budget development, IT/database management, implemented a safety conscious work culture, records and technical library management, quality control and assurance, and technical systems optimizations for a $1B Total Projected Cost (TPC) DOE Federal environmental restoration site. He worked for Department of Energy for nearly 30 years as a hydrogeologist and Federal Project Director before retiring in 2017.
Originally from San Diego County, Don has lived in western Colorado for nearly 30 years. He has degrees from Cal Poly SLO and San Diego State University and achieved Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers (FAC-P/PM) Level IV certification.
He has developed strong, enduring trust relations with elected officials, regulatory agencies, local communities, and the public. He is married to Diana, and they have two sons that live in Grand Junction. He farms in Debeque, Colorado, stays involved in the local community on Colorado River water issues and volunteers for many western slope non-profit organizations.
Joining Colorado PTAC gives him the opportunity to support his fellow citizens on the western slope and assist small businesses with government contracting opportunities. During farming season, Don is often seen with his dogs and a shovel on his shoulder irrigating his fields with water from the Colorado River.
